Plaits have languished away from being a chic daytime hair style favoured by the great and glossy for far too long. While they occasionally have a high fashion moment (I’m reminded of Yohji’s fish plaits circa Autumn 1999) wearing a plait day-to-day was deemed ’skanky’ by my sixteen-year-old self’s friends and clean, smooth, loose hair or a perky ponytail (”But you can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week”) continues to be the go-to style for most of the fash pack.
However yesterday I saw the chicest editor (in an oversized white shirt, slim cuffed crop trousers and neat lace-up brogues) with a Scandinavian blonde plait snaking halfway down her back. Her hair was swept away from her face in a soft centre parting with a few wisps round her ears. Loose and easy - it looked fantastic. I was tempted to DIY asap, because - best of all - it’s a style one can try immediately without waiting to visit a salon for a trim, colour or chop.
