May

May conjures up the basest longing for space and air in city dwellers, bringing us back to the sweet, dark earth and reminding us of pastoral paganism; those deep seated rural rituals and shady secrets that are nestled within our green and pleasant land. May is a Thomas Hardy novel, “When The Green Woods Laugh” and Laurie Lee rolled into one. Flaming June (surely the brashest Summer month) makes us decamp to airport lounges or pebbled Brighton beach, intoxicated by the month’s brassy, vulgar heat while May makes us yearn for dappled woods and headily-scented bluebell glades. Delicate, beguiling and mystical. Simple pleasures and peace and understanding.

Of course divine dresses feature heavily in my mind this month: Marc Jacobs, Vuitton and McQueen are fit for any May Queen.
